We often hear this question from our customers: "I live right by the Caspian Sea and the wind here can knock you over. Why are you offering me solar panels? Wouldn't a wind turbine be better?"
The logic seems sound. After all, Azerbaijan has huge potential. But there is a world of difference between industrial-scale turbines (the giant ones out at sea) and the small turbines designed for a private home or facility.
Helind Enerji installs both solar and wind systems (both are in our service portfolio). But our job is not just to sell you a product; it is to give you a solution that works. Let's use technical facts to see why the sun wins in an urban environment.
💡 Key points:
- Moving parts: a wind turbine's blades rotate (mechanical friction), while a solar panel stays still. Turbines break down sooner.
- Noise: turbines create noise and vibration while running, which can disturb neighbours in residential areas.
- Stable energy: sunrise and sunset times are precise. Wind is unstable (sometimes very strong, sometimes none at all).
- When to choose wind? If you have farmland, a mountainous site or a large open area by the sea, wind is ideal.
1. A physics lesson: cut-in speed and rated power
A solar panel wakes up with the first light of morning and works silently until evening. A wind turbine is different.
- Cut-in speed: for the blades to start turning, the wind must blow at least 3–4 m/s.
- Rated power: for the turbine to deliver its promised power (for example, 3 kW), the wind must blow at 11–12 m/s.
Baku has plenty of windy days, but not a steady 12 m/s all year round. As a result, the turbine spends most of the year either standing still or running very weakly.
2. Maintenance costs: friction vs. static
There is a golden rule in engineering: "Everything that moves breaks sooner or later."
- Wind turbine: it contains bearings, gears and a generator. Constant rotation creates vibration. These parts need lubrication and regular replacement.
- Solar panel: it has no moving parts at all. It simply sits on the roof. The only "maintenance" is rain, or you washing it when dust settles on it. That is why Helind readily gives its panels a 30-year warranty.
3. The urban environment and "turbulence"
Where buildings stand close together, the wind does not blow in a straight line. When it hits buildings, it creates eddies (the turbulence effect). This mixed airflow confuses the turbine blades and sharply reduces efficiency. Sunlight, on the other hand, reaches the roof unobstructed.
On top of that, the aerodynamic noise (humming) of a turbine can lead to complaints in dense residential areas.
4. So who are wind turbines for?
We are not against wind energy; we simply choose the right place for it. Wind turbines are irreplaceable in these cases:
- Farmland and farms: open fields, no buildings around, no noise problem.
- Hybrid systems: in winter, when there is less sun, there is often more wind. Combining sun and wind (hybrid) creates a perfect balance.
- Night-time energy: there is no sun at night, but the wind blows at night too.
The Helind approach: before selling you a wind turbine, we can measure your site for 1–2 weeks with an anemometer (a wind measuring device). If the average speed is not enough, we will not sell you that turbine. Honesty matters more to us than sales.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Question: Which is more expensive, 1 kW of solar panels or a 1 kW wind turbine?
Answer: Installing small wind turbines (including the mast, concrete foundation and so on) usually costs 1.5–2 times more than solar panels.
Question: Can I put a small turbine on my roof?
Answer: Technically it is possible, but we do not recommend it. Vibration can damage the walls and roofing of the house. It is better to place the turbine in the yard on a separate mast.
Question: They say vertical turbines are silent. Is that true?
Answer: Yes, vertical turbines are quieter and better suited to cities, but their power output is lower than that of traditional bladed turbines.
💨 Don't throw your money to the wind, make the right choice
Is your goal to save money or just to stand out?
If you want real savings, the statistics point to the sun. If you have a farm, let's measure your wind potential.
